A new spring…

With every year that passes, I look forward to the spring. I find the spring signifies new beginnings and an opportunity to start fresh. Perhaps more so than the new year! Certainly for me anyway…

As I think about my morning dog walks recently, I can picture colour, texture, and volume again in the trees and fields. It’s as is everything around us, yet again, is ‘having another go’. So why not allow ourselves to follow suit? My goal for this spring is to get out and about and absorb some of the inspiring events and fellow creatives in Cornwall.

As I sit writing this, I reflect on the wonderful exhibition I had the privilege of seeing last week by Chloe Tinsley (www.chloegallery.co.uk), at Trebah Gardens in Mawnan Smith. ‘The Colour Bath, Safe Haven in Vibrance’ is now open until May 14th. If you are in the area this month - you must go and take a peek.

Her use of colour is inspiring. The chaotic mark making somehow wonderfully encourages ‘a calm amongst the storm’ warmth for the viewer. Your eyes become enveloped by the cosmic size of the canvases; but this allows you to reconnect with the natural elements and the beauty of the landscapes depicted. The outdoor creation of these magnificent paintings is beautifully honest within each description: sea foam, heather, earth, gouache, acrylic, sun, salt are all components to the vibrance. As well as providing a breath from the day to day stresses, (and who doesn’t need that!) the ‘wildscape’ compositions highlight some of the most idyllic natural beauty the UK has to offer.

Tinsley is partaking in a residency at Trebah for the duration of the exhibition so you may see her out painting on the grounds if you’re lucky!

If you want the opportunity to see this brilliant showcase of vibrance, positivity and creativity - go take a look and grab one of Chloe’s nature trail packs from reception. ‘An Artists Trail for All’ guides you around the 26 acres of the glorious gardens; and with a simple stick of chalk or a biro (all provided), everyone is permitted to take a breath, pause and play with art and colour!

Tinsley’s paintings have uplifted and motivated the creativity within my own practice, as I move through this season . And as I write this, I must return to the bench to crack on!

Happy Springtime !
